Testing your position is fairly simple.
A good position will allow your rifle to recoil straight back, and will permit you to 'return to battery' and reacquire the target quickly. Great positions won't even loose sight of the target during recoil. Terrible positions will very obviously cause your rifle to loose its point of aim, and repositiong of the entire system will be necessary to re-acquire the target.
